Set in the beautiful surroundings of Camp Gilwell, this yearlong program invites young learners into the rhythms of food, plants, and outdoor living. Rooted in the same spirit as our nature-based programs, this offering brings together cooking, herbology, and outdoor living in a way that is both practical and meaningful. Our days move between the kitchen and the fire circle—tending flames, preparing food, working with plants, shelter building, playing games, and sharing songs to name a few. These core elements are woven throughout, creating a strong sense of connection, creativity, and belonging.
With access to a full indoor kitchen and outdoor cooking spaces, participants will explore seasonal ingredients, experiment with recipes, and build strong foundational skills—discovering how both food and herbs can nourish the body and spark curiosity.
Throughout the seasons, the program blends practical kitchen skills with deeper learning: the science of cooking, the secrets of baking over an open fire, and the foundations of herbal medicine-making. Participants will explore how ingredients transform through heat, time, and technique, while also learning simple medicinal preparations such as teas, infusions, and other gentle remedies.
With a focus on both wild and cultivated ingredients, learners will be introduced to foraging awareness and respectful plant use. Cooking will move between indoor kitchen spaces and outdoor fire-based methods using cast iron, offering a varied and immersive experience.
More than just recipes, this program is about building confidence, independence, and a meaningful relationship with food and place. Participants will gain the skills to prepare nourishing meals, experience the camaraderie of cooking and sharing together, and develop a deeper sense of connection, play, and belonging within the group and the natural world.
