Shelter Point Explorers Camp
Texada Island

An immersion in nature, curiosity, and connection.
Danu Folk School's qathet team invites children into four days of deep nature immersion at one of Texada's most beautiful spots. Shelter Point Explorers is an unhurried, heart-centred outdoor experience for children who are ready to slow down, pay attention, and discover what the living world has to teach them.

Each day unfolds across the beach, campground, coastal trails, and surrounding forests — following the Coyote Mentoring tradition of child-led curiosity and experiential discovery. Rather than moving through a fixed curriculum, children are invited to follow their own thread of wonder, guided by experienced mentors who know how to hold space for explorative learning. The result is days that feel both purposeful and free: full of skill-building, laughter, quiet observation, and the particular aliveness that comes from spending real time outdoors in a beautiful place.

The camp weaves together ancestral ways of knowing and practical land skills — wild crafting, mindful harvesting, navigation and tracking, local plant and animal knowledge — with the daily practices that help children feel grounded, connected, and inspired. Songs open and close the day. Stories carry the teachings. Sit spots offer stillness. Games bring the group alive. And always, there is time to wander, to wonder, and to follow what catches the eye.

This camp is rooted in the same philosophy that guides all of Danu's programming — respect for the natural world, reciprocity with the land, and deep trust in children's innate capacity for discovery. It is designed and led by Lisa, core steward of the qathet Light Trekkers program, alongside Sofia Khan; their years of experience and genuine love for this coastal landscape infuse every day of camp so that kids come home feeling connected and inspired.

"As a homeschooling family, we are always looking for programs that align with our educational values. This forest school program has been an important part of our homeschooling journey for the last four years. We appreciate the child-led approach to learning and the focus on relationships with peers and mentors. My children have made lasting friendships and learned valuable lessons about the local flora and fauna. Rain or shine my kids come home beaming and full of stories after each day."
