Forest Wayfinders

**THIS PROGRAM IS NOW FULL - PLEASE SEE OUR MONDAY WAYFINDERS PROGRAM FOR SOMETHING SIMILAR**
The Forest Wayfinders Program is our flagship program that has been going strong for six years, offering a yearlong journey into the heart of nature, community, and self-discovery. Held weekly in the rich and diverse landscapes of the Japanese Town forests, this program offers an immersive blend of outdoor exploration, hands-on learning, and nature connection routines, all rooted in respect and reciprocity with the natural world.

Guided by experienced mentors, Wayfinders explore the rhythms of the seasons and the mysteries of the forest, engaging in activities that spark curiosity, build resilience, and nurture a sense of belonging. Children will develop practical skills and deepen their understanding of the interconnectedness of our ecology while forging meaningful connections with peers and the land.

Program Highlights:

-
Nature as Teacher: Through guided explorations, children will learn about medicinal and food plants, natural materials, animal tracking, bird language, navigation, and the ecological relationships that sustain life.
-
Hands-On Discovery: From crafting with natural materials to practicing outdoor skills, each session invites children to use their hands and creativity to engage with the land in meaningful ways.
-
Seasonal Cycles: Each session weaves in lessons from the turning seasons, helping children attune to natural cycles and discover personal growth and transformation in harmony with the land.
-
Building Community: Gratitude practices, storytelling, group games, and campfire gatherings create a strong sense of community, where children feel supported to share, learn, and grow together.
-
Inspiring Wonder: The program is designed to spark a lifelong love of nature, fostering a sense of curiosity and awe as children explore the forest’s trails, uncover its secrets, and find their unique place within its ecosystem.

The Forest Wayfinders Program encourages children to step into their innate curiosity, explore the world around them, and discover their personal gifts in a supportive and inspiring environment.

Running from September 2025 to June 2026, this 32-session program provides a full year of connection, learning, and growth for children ready to embark on a journey of exploration and wonder in the forests of Cumberland.

This program will be co-led by Dani, Allie, and sometimes Kes.
"As a homeschooling family, we are always looking for programs that align with our educational values. This forest school program has been an important part of our homeschooling journey for the last four years. We appreciate the child-led approach to learning and the focus on relationships with peers and mentors. My children have made lasting friendships and learned valuable lessons about the local flora and fauna. Rain or shine my kids come home beaming and full of stories after each day."

"Forest school with Kes and Allie is the anchor of our week. It continues to bolster my child's deep love for these lands. He comes from the day with flushed, smudged cheeks, grinning and peaceful. He breaks into song as we pass Cedar, drops to his knees to visit Slug, and scurries up trees to harvest and nibble on Licorice Fern. As a parent, I am so grateful for the respectful, caring and joyful community that Kes and Allie have created. We look forward to another year of Wayfinders with Danu Folk School!"

“Dani has been a wonderful mentor to both of my daughters. She has a kind, caring and nurturing approach to working with youth in an outdoor setting. I would highly recommend any program she is running, or involved with. My girls always come home happy after a day out with Dani learning, crafting and playing games. Overall awesome human.”
